USAF Retires MH-53 Pave Low

Effective this month, the U.S. Air Force will retire the last of its Sikorsky MH-53 Pave Low helicopters. The heavy-lift Pave Low, the Air Force’s version of the Super Stallion, first saw service in Vietnam where it was used to conduct hoist extractions of downed pilots from thick jungles. The enormous twin-engine helicopter’s most recent deployment was in Iraq performing special operations missions. The Air Force says some MH-53 pilots will be transitioned into the V-22 Osprey, while others will be assigned to a Special Operations squadron to fly the U-28, a military version of the civilian Pilatus PC-12 airplane.
