Canada Seeks More Helicopters

The commander of the Canadian army would like to have new helicopters. Lt. Gen. Andrew Leslie said he would like to have medium and heavy-lift helicopters in Afghanistan. Canadian ground troops there, he said, have had to hitch rides with allies to move around by air. The Canadian military sold its medium-lift Chinooks to the Dutch in the early 1990's and are currently looking for replacements. In mid-2006, the Canadian military said it planned to acquire a dozen CH-47 Chinooks in a fast-track acquisition. Transport helicopters would require the use of helicopter gunships as escorts in dangerous areas.  For related stories
