V-22 Fleet is Rich in Spares, IG Says
The U.S. Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) is holding at least $8.7 million in excessive inventory for V-22 spare parts, the Pentagon’s inspector general has found. IG auditors selected 53 Osprey spare parts for review on a “non-statistical” basis and determined the DLA’s aviation unit is holding excessive inventory for 22 of them, their June 24 report says. The IG identified a key cause: the DLA did not evaluate the reasonableness of spares quantities for the Bell Boeing tilt rotor. How excessive is the inventory? According to the IG, the DLA has enough of 11 parts reviewed to last at least 15 years, including two spare parts whose inventory could supply the U.S. Marine Corps/U.S. Air Force fleet for 50 years or more.
