Carrier Sails with Double Helo Assets

The aircraft carrier John C. Stennis set sail on Jan. 17 with two 12-aircraft helicopter squadrons, one more squadron than the usual compliment. The Navy deployed a second set of MH-60 Seahawks to test the unit’s ability to adequately take over the duties formerly performed by other aircraft, such as the twin-engine S-3 Viking airplane used for anti-submarine warfare. The experiment also reflects the carrier’s increased reliance on rotorcraft for humanitarian and littoral operations. For related information
