Helo Carrier Joins Japan Naval Review

Japan featured its new helicopter carrier in its first fleet review since that nation removed World War II prohibitions on the use of military force beyond its borders. The carrier Izumo, the largest warship Japan has commissioned since that war, was the centerpiece of a 40-vessel Maritime Self-Defense Force armada that conducted the review Oct. 18 in the waters south of Tokyo, near Yokosuka (where the U.S. has a naval base). The U.S. Navy’s nuclear-powered carrier USS U.S. Ronald Reagan, which deployed to Yokosuka Oct. 1, was present at the review. The Reagan is in the foreground of the photo, steaming alongside the Izumo (followed by the Japanese destroyer Teruzuki).
