and partner DRS Technologies have conducted flight testing of the new Mast Mounted Sight-Diode Pumped (MMS-DP) laser rangefinder/designator (LRF/D) on a Bell OH-58D Kiowa Warrior at the U.S. Army's Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona.
Pending final approval by the government, the MMS-DP LRF/D will be a drop-in replacement for the legacy MMS LRF/D, which has been in use with the Army's hunter-killer helicopter teams for 25 years. The system has the ability to keep the helicopter teams concealed while acquiring and illuminating targets from stand-off ranges.
The flight testing featured guidance of a live Hellfire missile to its target. If approved, the U.S. Army's forward repair activities could use it as a drop-in replacement for more than 600 original lasers.
