Marine Corps Sikorsky CH-53D Sea Stallions with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward), Heavy Helicopter Squadron 463 have marked a first in Afghanistan. The CH-53Ds successfully performed a rapid ground refueling of two Bell AH-1W Super Cobras. While Marines have utilized this refueling method since the Vietnam War, this marked the first time CH-53Ds were used to refuel in a combat environment. The location of the refuel, Patrol Base Wolfpack, was also another Sea Stallion first. The base is the southernmost point in Afghanistan that a CH-53D has flown.
