Associations Coax US Support for Vertical Lift

Millions of dollars in additional funding and other supportive legislation may go toward rotary-wing technology in FY16, thanks to efforts led by American Helicopter Society International and other technology groups.

The President is expected next week to sign a defense budget deal the U.S. Congress reached Dec. 15. AHS and the Vertical Lift Consortium led efforts to include in that deal an additional $10 million for the U.S. Army's Aviation Advanced Technology Development for advanced rotary-wing technology in support of Future Vertical Lift. Congress also added another $3.4 million for “helicopter seat improvements” to reduce injuries from impact. In total, this increased the Army Aviation Advanced Technology funding by nearly 15% from $89.7 million to $103.1 million.
AHS, working with VLC and other technical professional societies, also altered legislation that it said would otherwise have solidified “draconian restrictions prohibiting government employees from attending Science and Technology (S&T) conferences.”
