Rotorcraft Report: Heard in the Hallways: A Gun By Any Other Name

What is in a name? BAE Systems is developing an interim defensive weapon system for the U.S. Air Force’s special-operations CV-22 Osprey under a January $491,000 contract from the U.S. Special Operations Command for rapid development, installation, testing and qualification of the gun. The contract could be worth as much as $16.3 million.

The effort is no doubt a worthy one. But the belly-mounted gun is billed as an "all-quadrant" defensive weapon, which prompted an old Osprey hand at July’s Farnborough Air Show to ask this question: How can it be "all-quadrant" if the gun can’t fire up?

Some A-10s didn\'t make the C upgrade... Why not strap left-over Avenger 30mm Cannons on the V-22, hell the Marines like/need fire power! Ad 2 (two) mini-guns on side ports and at the rear door (get rid of that M240 currently at THE Back ramp)and then it can hover and lay down massive suppressive fire, as well as gaining the ability to attack hard targets viz-a-viz the Avenger! I also believe that 40-50 A-10C aircraft should be transferred from the Air Force to the Marines to be flown by Marine Air Groups off of CVNs!!! A-10c/d \'Walrus\' = The firepower/close air support that beach landings need.(the airframe is Navy/Carrier tough, new landing gear and a tail-hook and wallah! Ready...) Plus the Cobra-Zulu is SO fantastic!!! Semper Fi
