Rotorcraft Report: Iraqi Foes Target Rescuers

Foes in Iraq are evolving tactics to improve chances of inflicting casualties on U.S. troops. An example was the May 28 downing of a Bell Helicopter/U.S. Army OH-58 about 50 nm northeast of Baghdad. When two rescue teams were sent for the downed airmen, they were each attacked with roadside bombs. The Kiowa crew died. Six rescuers were injured. "It is very clear the number of attacks against U.S. forces is up and have grown more effective," said Maj. Gen. James Simmons, deputy commander for operations in Iraq. Foes also seem to have shifted their focus from Iraqi security forces to U.S. troops, he said.
