Members of the 1st Cavalry Division Assn. placed wreaths at Washington, D.C., memorials for veterans of World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars on Nov. 11, 2015, Veterans Day in the U.S. November marked the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Ia Drang, the first major Vietnam War fight between regular U.S. and North Vietnamese forces and the one that secured the helicopter’s role in U.S. military operations. On Nov. 14, 1965, Bell Helicopter UH-1s transported elements of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry of the 1st Air Cavalry Division to Landing Zone X-Ray (about 40 mi southwest of Pleiku, South Vietnam). Soon thereafter, three North Vietnamese regiments attacked them. The U.S. soldiers held off repeated attacks, inflicting heavy casualties. Hueys flew in more 7th Cavalry soliders, helping U.S. forces survive three more days of attacks. Photo courtesy of the U.S. Army / Staff Sgt. Bryce S. Dubee, 1st Cav. Div. Public Affairs
