Helitech Conference to Include Speakers from EASA, SESAR and CHC

Rotor & Wing International Bureau Chief Andrew
Drwiega (shown sitting at far left) chaired the 2011
Helitech Conference, which focused on the role of the
offshore wind farm industry.
A three-day rotorcraft conference will be one of the main draws at this year’s Helitech (September 24-26), being staged for the first time at the ExCeL in London, UK. It is being run in association with the European Helicopter Association (EHA).

The theme for the opening session is “The Future for the Rotorcraft Sector.” Vittorio Morassi, Chairman of the European Helicopter Association (EHA), will moderate the session, with the keynote address being delivered by Dr. Norbert Lohl, certification director of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), who will address the future in terms of opportunities and challenges, put into perspective by examining European initiatives and the regulatory environment.

Following this Carlo Borghini, deputy executive director of the Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research (SESAR) Joint Undertaking, will discuss SESAR initiatives and milestones, including: ‘the progressive adoption of enabling technology to 2020 and beyond; industry/OEM collaboration in design and manufacture of low-cost, low-power, light weight communications and navigation and surveillance equipment to encourage early adoption; certification standards and those best-equipped and best-served in certain types of airspace.”

Sigmund Lockert, deputy manager of flight operations at CHC Helicopter, will then address the Single European Sky as it affects the rotorcraft sector. The EHA has been representing the rotorcraft users in some of the 300 projects within SESAR’s program. Outcomes will affect rotorcraft operations both operationally and in terms of equipment.

The final speakers are Marc Torres, air navigation consultant at Pildo Labs, who will examine the ongoing “implementation of IFR procedures for helicopter operations using GPS and EGNOS” – allowing pilots to keep flying in low visibility conditions.

The closing speaker, Capt. Carlos de la Cruz, HEMS pilot at INAER, will close with an operator’s perspective on projects in which INAER is involved and INAER’s interest in deploying IFR procedures using GPS and EGNOS.

Night-time Helicopter Emergency Operations is the theme for the second day of the Helitech International conference and it will be moderated by Gerry Hermer, aviation consultant at East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA).

Tim Page, chief executive at EAAA, will open the first session. His organization “recently became the first emergency service operation to be granted permission to fly during the hours of darkness. He will explain the process that led to that decision. A European perspective will be given by Capt. Carlos de la Cruz, who will focus on Spanish night-time operations including the use of NVGs.

During the afternoon the agenda changes again, this time to Rulemaking - Open Issues moderated by the British Helicopter Association’s (BHA) chief executive Peter Norton. This will include operations and flight crew licensing rules relevant for helicopter operations. Peter Moeller, flight operations manager, Rotor Wing at Luxembourg Air Ambulance, will then present “The challenges ahead – Flight & Duty Time Limitations” followed by Gerhard Wittmann of ADAC discussing “The Challenges Ahead – Helicopter Emergency Medical Services and Public Interest Sites.”

The theme on the final day will be “Business Challenges and Opportunities.” Speakers include Dr. Andrew Black, director and head of Analysisat Hawk Associates, who will present a market forecast for the rotorcraft sector looking at sales, values, after-market as well as sector trends and new sector/market opportunities. A session and subsequent panel on “Financing the Future” will include Aoife O’Sullivan, partner at Kennedys Aviation; Jason Kmiecik, chief appraiser at HeliValues; and Andrew Woolfson, vice president for Europe, Middle East & Africa at AirFinance.

Audience participation will be encouraged through panel discussions and Q&A sessions.
