Rotorcraft Report: HawkWorks, Set to Open at Schweizer, Looks to Expand
With a newly hired workforce of 100 in place, Sikorsky Aircraft’s Hawk Works @ Schweizer is slated to start work later this month when it receives its first H-60 Naval Hawk. But even before the completion center at Big Flats, adjacent to Schweizer Aircraft’s production facility at New York’s Elmira-Corning Regional Airport, opens its doors, company officials are looking to expand it.
"We had always planned for an expansion, contingent on how well the military H-60 derivatives sold," said Randy Simpson, general manager of Schweizer Aircraft’s Horseheads, N.Y. production and engineering facility and the Hawk Works. H-60 sales have exceeded expectations, and Schweizer officials are confident they soon will need to approach their parent company with a proposal to expand. "We’re looking to add up to 65,000 sq ft and even have plans beyond that, as well," Simpson said.
