Two AgustaWestland Helos Take Flight
Military | Airframes
AgustaWestland conducted the initial flight for two helicopters—the AW149 medium twin and the AW159 military helicopter—in mid-November. The first flight of the AW149 took place on Nov. 13 at AgustaWestland’s plant in Vergiate, Italy. Chief Test Pilot Giuseppe Lo Coco took the helicopter on a 20-minute test flight that focused on general handling and basic systems. AgustaWestland expects to fly a second prototype in 2010 with initial operational capability (IOC) projected in 2014.

The first flight of the AW159 happened one day earlier, on Nov. 12 at AgustaWestland’s facility in Yeovil, UK. Chief Test Pilot Donald Maclaine carried out a variety of handling maneuvers and general checks during the flight. Two other AW159s will join the prototype in 2010, with deliveries projected to start in 2011. More
