Helicopters Battle to Save Crops

Once again, the night sky is filled with the sound of helicopters circling farmers’ endangered winter crops in Belle Glade, Fla. as they use the downwash from their rotor blades to discourage the formation of damaging frost on delicate plants. Estimates are that the subfreezing nighttime lows of 20-30 degrees in this normally mild region will kill hundreds of thousands of acres of crops that normally enjoy the Florida climate. Helicopters, while expensive to operate, have become a common choice for farmers with few other options left for protecting vast areas of land.
