Proposed Bill Would Ban NYC Helo Tours

A recent bill proposed by the New York City Council would ban helicopter tourism over the city's five boroughs. The bill is being drafted by Councilman Carlos Menchaca (D-Brooklyn), and if passed would threaten tourist businesses operating out of the lower Manhattan heliport. Proponents of the bill, including several Council members and city residents, cite noise complaints as the primary reason. Though the bill is not expected to target other local helicopter operations, it is not the only proposed action against the state's helicopter industry. In June, an East Hampton beach community proposed to limit helicopter charter flights to once per week, though this bid was blocked by a U.S. judge.
