Kaman Corporation — and its high-profile helicopter division — have begun reaping the benefits of a two-year transformation that is changing the face of this venerable industry leader and innovator.
Bold New Leadership
At the corporate level, Neil Keating was named successor to Paul Kuhn in the role of president and CEO in March 2008. Four months later, in July 2008, Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine named Kaman No. 4 on its bat of five-year most-improved companies. In Keating’s new role he appointed Gregory steiner as president of Kaman Aerospace Group. Also, within the Helicopters Division, President sal Bordonaro introduced an aggressive agenda and new marketing team led by Director Mark Tattershall
Confidence and Pride
Kaman is actively marketing its highly capable and supportable mission-ready SH-2G Super Seasprite helicopters to potential international and domestic naval customers. The Egyptian Air Force has entered its 11th year of successful robust performance of its SH-2G [E] helicopter fleet. Other international militaries using the SH-2G Super Seasprite include the Royal New Zealand Air Forces and the Poland Navy.
An Industry in Need
Some of the biggest names in aerospace, including Sikorsky Aircraft, are seeking support from HeliworX, Kaman’s full-service aerospace innovation and manufacturing support center. Backed by Kaman’s infrastructure and expertise, HeliworX is the only subcontractor with the OEM advantage capable of offering design/analysis, manufacturing and test and flight solutions for an industry dealing with unprecedented demand. Other capabilities include integration, composite and metallic manufacturing, final assembly, rotor blade whirl towers, a sand erosion test facility and flight test.
Up and Running
In 2006, the company reached an agreement with Lockheed Martin to market unmanned K-MAX helicopters to military customers worldwide, and in August 2008, Kaman delivered the first K-MAX helicopter to Lockheed Martin in support of the test and development program for a manned-unmanned K-MAX. The aircraft was handed off to a Lockheed Martin pilot and more deliveries are imminent. In November, a K-MAX Unmanned Multi-Mission Helicopter was flown at Quantico Marine Corps Base in Virginia. The demonstration helped highlight the aircraft’s potential to benefit future battlefield operations
At the same time, commercial K-MAX helicopters continue to make headlines around the world with spectacular rescues, firefighting, unusual missions and disaster relief. Under Kaman’s new leadership, we are developing exciting new technologies that will give the K-MAX greater mission capability in its role as a premier firefighting helicopter. Watch for it.
Focus on the Future
Overall Kaman is continuing efforts to reduce operating and life cycle costs, while improving performance, safety and aircraft availability. For example, Kaman is working closely with Hontek and the U.S. Army in support of a highly successful Blade Erosion Protection program. The new process has proven so effective in reducing erosion that the unique coating is now mandated for use on all BLACK HAWK rotor blades and has the potential to benefit helicopters worldwide. Looking ahead, Bordonaro and his team see a bright future that includes significant growth for HeliworX, including, work beyond rotorcraft; K-MAX fleet sales; ITAS software completion for seasprite; more unmanned K-MAX demonstrations and deliveries and even growth through acquisition.
