Coaxial Helo Designers Eye R22/R44 Market Share

An Australian-based technology company is developing a light helicopter that it sees as future competition for Robinson Helicopters. Since 2003, Wieland Helicopter Technologies (WHT) has been building and fine-tuning a single-seat helicopter prototype that uses a coaxial rotor system. Coaxial rotor systems incorporate two sets of counter-rotating main rotor blades positioned one atop the other, thus removing the need for a tail rotor. WHT plans to sell a two-seat version that will offer more power than the R22 for a projected $227,000, and a five-seat version to compete against the R44 and Robinson’s future R66 turbine for an unspecified price.
