Rotorcraft Report: Mi-38 Engine Confusion

Russia’s second Mi-38 medium lift helicopter has been assembled by the Kazan Helicopter Works — without Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127TS engines. Instead, Kazan has installed two Russian-built Klimov TV7-117V engines in their place. According to Georgy Sinelshchikov, general director of the Moscow Helicopter Plant, U.S. laws restricting the sale of "dual purpose" (commercial-military) components have scuttled P&WC’s agreement to provide PW127TS engines to Russia. "Unfortunately, starting this year the [Mi-38] helicopter may lose the engine that has been originally designed for it," Sinelshchikov said in a report issued by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti. "It seems that our Canadian partners from Pratt & Whitney are planning to pull out from the project." Not so, replied Pratt & Whitney Canada spokesperson Maria Mandato. "Despite the reports you’re getting, P&WC has not pulled out of the contract," she said. "We are still in ongoing discussions with our customer." Maybe, but a Kazan Helicopters news release says that the company will be using Russian TV7-117V engines in its Mi-38s. According to Andrey Shibitov, general director of Open Society Helicopters of Russia, all Mi-38 "efforts...will be directed on this variant of the helicopter."
