Dale's aviation career began in 1975 when joining the United States Air Force as an air traffic controller. After completing the basic air traffic controller training for the USAF, he was assigned to Berlin Air Route Traffic Control Center (BARTCC), Berlin, Germany from February 1976 until February 1978.
His next assignment was at England AFB, Louisiana from March 1978 until July 1983. During this period he worked at Denver’s Stapleton Airport from August 1981 until January 1982 on temporary duty.
Upon discharge from the USAF Dale was hired by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as an air traffic controller. In September of 1983 he completed the FAA’s air traffic control school in Oklahoma City, OK and was assigned to the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (KCLT) until April of 1987. From there he moved to the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (KATL) until April of 1993. During his time at KATL he was an air traffic controller, a Training Specialist and also served one year as an Area Supervisor.
In April of 1993 Dale returned to KCLT until March of 2000. In March of 2000 he was assigned to Washington, DC as a Liaison between the FAA and NATCA to the requirements branch (ARS). In April of 2004 Dale became the first NATCA liaison to the Joint Planning and Development Office (JPDO) until returning to KCLT in August of 2005 where he worked as an air traffic controller until his retirement from the FAA in September of 2007.
In September of 2007 Dale was hired by NATCA as their Director of Safety and Technology. This department coordinates with the FAA and NATCA’s membership reference on all issues that affect safety and technology. Dale is an Instrumented Rated pilot with approximately 2500 hours of flight time and has been active in the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) for over 25 years. At this time he serves as the AOPA Airport Support Network (ASN) contact for the Chester Catawba Regional Airport (KDCM), Chester, South Carolina.
