Security Shortlines

Estefan Bullet Jewelry Barred

Airport security personnel in London recently confiscated Gloria Estefan's "Bullets 4 Peace" pendant because the exclusive piece actually has real bullets in it. The pendant was designed for people who want to show their support for peacekeeping efforts around the world while remaining stunningly fashionable. The bullets are reportedly from war zones. Luckily, the pilot of the flight decided the pop singer was not a terrorist looking to take over the plane and held on to the jewelry until they landed in Italy.

First Ukrainian Customer for CabinVu

AeroSvit, the Ukraine's largest network carrier, has selected AD Aerospace's CabinVu in-flight security systems for fitting on its Boeing 767 and 737 aircraft. The Cockpit Door Monitoring System improves the safety of the cockpit by increasing the situational awareness of the pilots providing them with a clear and unrestricted view of any activity in the area outside the cockpit door and in the adjacent galleys. CabinVu provides pilots with a forward looking, clear and unobstructed view of the area outside the cockpit door and in the adjacent galleys from their usual seated positions. A series of cameras are linked to either one or two monitors and associated controllers within easy reach of the pilots for ease and comfort of use. With the view provided by the system the pilots can visually identify anyone requesting entry and take appropriate action, should an incident arise.

RCMP Sued Over Taser Death

A Canadian woman has filed a lawsuit for damages against the RCMP, the Canada Border Services Agency and the Vancouver Airport Authority over a tasering incident at Vancouver International two years ago. The lawsuit seeks damages for psychological injury and punitive damages. The woman's son died after being Tasered five times by four RCMP officers responding to a 911 call at the airport. The lawsuit says the conduct was ``an abuse of power, reprehensible, malicious, oppressive and high-handed.'' The suit claims negligence, assault and battery and malfeasance by the RCMP.

Millions for Security

TSA awarded $9 million to John Wayne Airport for construction of a new checked baggage screening system at Terminal C. The system will come on-line in late 2011. The airport currently serves about 9 million passengers per year.

TSA also awarded $7 million to Wichita Mid-Continent Airport (ICT) for the construction of an inline baggage screening system at the new airport terminal. It will be an upgrade to the stand-alone system that is currently used at the facility and is due to be completed in mid-2013. The new terminal project is a $160 million effort to replace the current facility that is nearly 60 years old.

San Francisco International received $5 million and Dallas/Fort Worth International received $6 million for the purchase of additional closed circuit television (CCTV) systems.
