Still Tops for ETOPS

Cut 15 minutes from the 192 minutes on one engine a United Airlines [UAL] twinjet flew in a March 17 divert to Kona, Hawaii (see ASW, March 24). According to a United official, the EEC (electronic engine control) telemetry has come in with 177 minutes from engine shutdown to touchdown.

That's still about an hour and 15 minutes more time on a single engine divert than the previous one hour and 41 minute record on one engine posted Jan. 13 by British Airways B777 (see ASW, March 31, 2003). These successful diverts are viewed in some quarters as evidence that planning for extended operations (ETOPS) has been prudent.
