News You Might Have Missed

On any given day, as I cull the hundreds of subscriptions for airline and aviation news, I find between 50 and 100 stories of interest to the readers of Aviation Today Daily Brief, but am only able to share about 15 to 25.

I note other news services – Reuters and ATA’s Smart Brief – sometimes share another 10 that I may not have had room for that day. So, on any given day you see less than half the stories that are of interest to you. I save these other stories for another day but, I’ll be damned if the news doesn’t keep on pouring in from around the world forcing what otherwise would be important and/or interesting stories to the bottom of the list and further away from publication.

That is frustrating to me, because I know knowledge is power and the earlier you get your news the faster you can act on it. That is why I very occassional serve you up a press release, but not very often. It is also why today, I decided to share some of my backlog with you including pronouncements from Boeing about hydrogen power and another story about runway developments from Wired Magazine. Also on tap is news that the little aircraft manufacturer we thought was finally doomed, may have another life yet as new investors try to buy the assets of Eclipse. That, of course, begs the question as to whether these new investors are crazy, but there you are.

Then there is the customer feedback on airline service at a time when other headlines cry out about how airlines are trying to improve. They appear below in no particular order. And, because I’m ever mindful of just how precious your time is in perusing the daily headlines, I’ve only included a handful.

One more editor’s note on philosophy regarding safety issues as well as commentary and analysis. On the latter, I provide commentary that may be somewhat controversial, some of which you have seen this week. I call it like I see it, for the most part, but I'm also hopeful it will raise a debate from which we can all learn.

I also generally leave accident coverage to my colleague Ramon Lopez over at ATDB’s sister publication Air Safety Week. The exception comes when it has a potentially harmful impact to an entire industry which needs to be analyzed as in the case of Colgan. That is why you saw such disparate coverage of the US Airways and Turkish Airlines accident compared to Colgan. I leave these stories to Ramon for two reasons. First, you get most of the breaking news from television such as CNN, to which we often link in the Breaking News segment on our home page. Second, Ramon does a much better job of analyzing aviation safety than I do. Our partnership is just a reflection of how we leverage the power of our web site to serve you best.

Finally, I invite you to comment on ATDB's coverage so I can tailor the product to better suit your needs. The comments section can be found at the bottom of each of the two top stories in each day's edition.
