Indonesia Adopts Aviation Safety Bill
Indonesia's Parliament has passed a new aviation safety measure aimed at improving air safety, a demand of the European Union that banned Indonesian carriers from its airspace in 2007 following a string of accidents. Indonesia will set up an independent national commission that will report to the President and carry out investigations into aviation accidents. The European Commission (EC) welcomed the new law, saying "this was one of the elements called for by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and is a significant development for the improvement of air safety in Indonesia. The European Commission looks forward to discussing ... the implementation of this new law during its regular dialogue with the Indonesian authorities," the EC statement added. ICAO identified over 120 problems with Indonesia's air safety system, including the lack of aircraft surveillance and inability of inspectors to have a plane grounded, and made several recommendations aimed at improving air safety standards.
