Incorrect Part Had A Part To Play

The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) of Canada has released its final report into the collapse of the landing gear on a Northern Dene Airways Metro III on landing at La Ronge Airport, Saskatchewan, on Sept. 21, 2004. On touchdown, the left wing dropped, the propeller hit the runway and the aircraft traveled about 200 feet through the infield before the nose and right main gear were torn rearwards with the left gear collapsing into its wheel well. Three passengers suffered minor injuries.

The TSB found that an incorrect part was used in the left landing gear assembly and that a check that might have revealed the problem was not performed. Since the accident, Northern Dene Airways has commissioned an independent safety audit of its operations, and the company that maintains the aircraft has made changes to its maintenance procedures.
