In-Flight Procedures for SARS

What American Airlines (AA) has advised its crews:

"Under AA medical guidance, flight service has provided flight attendants with specific guidance for handling suspected SARS cases in flight. Their first step is to immediately notify the captain. Time permitting, the captain should contact the physician on call through dispatch as soon as possible for real-time advice and assistance.

"Important notes:

  • High fever is one of the determining factors for SARS.
  • Crewmembers do not need face masks or gloves when dealing with suspected SARS passengers. Simple handwashing with soap and water is effective to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Relay suspected passenger's full name and seat number to dispatch."
