GA Traffic Inching Up, Biz Down; Overnight News
While general aviation traffic rose ever so slightly – by 1.5% – in June versus May, it is still a dramatic 8.5% down from the year-ago period, according to FlightAware's flight tracking database. The company said charter operators led the biggest change with an 8.6% jump in June compared to May.
FlightAware cited Nantucket, MA as the airport with the largest significant gain in GA traffic for the month of June 2009 as summer travelers flocked to the sea. Nantucket Memorial experienced a gain of 60.1%, contrasted by the airport with the biggest significant drop in traffic, which was Palm Beach International in West Palm Beach, FL with a loss of 32.1%. Year over year, the airport with the largest significant gain in GA traffic for June 2009 was Barnstable Municipal in Hyannis, MA with an increase of 2.5%, but the biggest drop in GA traffic was found at San Francisco International in San Francisco with a decrease of 30.3%.
General aviation single engine and multi-engine piston activity increased by 3.3% in June 2009 compared to May 2009, turboprop activity increased by 2.8% in June compared to May, and jet activity decreased by 2.0% in June compared to May. The aircraft type with the largest significant gain in GA traffic for the month of June was the Aero Commander 500 with a gain of 36.2%, contrasted by the aircraft type with the biggest significant drop in traffic, which was the Gulfstream Aerospace Gulfstream V with a loss of 14.1%. Year over year, the aircraft type with the largest significant gain in traffic for June was the Cessna 400 with an increase of 33.9%, but the biggest drop in traffic was found with the Eclipse 500 with a decrease of 54.8%.
Meanwhile, Aviation Research Group, in issuing its TRAQPak data, said business aviation continued its “straight line trend in June 2009” but with an every so slight decline in June of 1.45% from May. TRAQPak data shows June 2009 vs. June of 2008 flight activity comparison indicates an overall decline of -16.8% with large cabin aircraft showing the greatest variance at -31.7%. ARG/US estimates flight activity has dropped an average of -0.87% per month for the last twelve months, with total flight activity declining -21.18% year over year.
