Feb. 5 Airworthiness Directive (AD) No. AD/A330/28 issued by Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) of Australia. Flight control system safety. Airbus A330 airplanes. Sudden uncommanded elevator movement during landing. Manufacturer has revised minimum equipment list (MEL) prohibiting dispatch with PRIM 1 computer inoperative. AD effective Feb. 11. Compliance w/in 7 days of effective date. Action follows Airbus service bulletin/software modification action. Also follows French Direction G�n�rale de l'Aviation Civile (DGAC) AD action. Comparable Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) action not sighted. Previously hidden glitch in flight control system.
Jan. 30 Final Rule Docket No. 2002-NM-82-AD, transmitting airworthiness directive AD 2004-02-09 Electrical system safety Douglas-built MD-81, -82, -83, -87 and -88 airplanes. To prevent internal overheating and arcing of circuit breakers and wiring due to long-term use and breakdown of internal components of the breakers, which could result in smoke and fire in the cockpit and cabin. Effective March 5. Inspect within 18 mos. and replace discrepant breakers. FAA action follows Boeing alert service bulletin MD-80-24A194, Rev. 1, of March 11, 2003. Manifestation of aging circuit breakers, the subject of an FAA study. (See ASW, Feb. 10, 2003)
Dec. 9, 2003 Notice of Proposed Special Conditions, Flammability Reduction System Docket No. NM270 Fuel system safety FAA seeks comment on a system to inert flammable vapors in the center wing tank (CWT) of B747 aircraft, with possible additional application to B737, B757, B767 and B777 aircraft. Comments due Feb. 20. Extension of original Jan. 23 deadline for comments, based on telephone conversation with docket manager. (See ASW, Dec. 15)
