22 March Biak (Indonesia) 767-300 x 2 of QANTAS and Air New Zealand QF188 and Air New Zealand flt 71 missed by as little as 125m (& 800m hoz) at 35,800ft off Biak (Irian Jaya). 268 pax aboard Evasive action by both after a TCAS Resolution Alert (head-on at FL360 in Indonesian controlled airspace).
11 May 1746Z Winnipeg, Manitoba 737-76N of WestJet Reg: C-GWSH WJA602 lost directional control on landing snow-covered r/way 13. Nil Very nearly overran the 8700ft runway after weathercocking on slushy surface.
11 May 0557Z Vancouver, British Columbia 767-300 of Air Canada Reg: C-FCAG ACA896 rec'd a "rudder ratio" & an "aileron lockout" EICAS msg on climb (plus an autopilot failure & numerous pressure instruments out of tolerance). Nil Returned & landed 5000kgs overweight. Maint replaced air data computer and conducted an overweight landing check
14 May 0400Z Dorval, Quebec 737 of Delta Flt: DAL714 A/c went around with an hydraulic problem then landed/shutdown on 06L. Nil Lost nosewheel steering. Runway closed for 30 minutes while a/c removed.
14 May 2115Z Calgary, Alberta 737 of WestJet Flt: WJA285 Reported an asymmetric flaps indication on appch & went around. Nil Arr from Vancouver. Maint replaced rt trailing edge flap position transmitter.
16 May 1030L Egegik A/P, Alaska Cessna C208B of Avion Capital N9820F substantial damage when right wing was lifted by a gust and struck the ground (& later struck a truck). Nil On taxi-out a/c encountered winds recorded as gusting to 48kts. During recovery further damage by windgusts.
18 May 2129Z Williams Lake, BC DHC-8 of Air Canada JAZZ JZA8238 shutdown eng & diverted enroute with an engine fire indication. Nil Prince George-Vancouver. Continuous fire-warning pronounced spurious.
19 May 1945Z Iquitos, Peru 737 of Aero Continente OB-1751P crew shut down port engine shortly after takeoff and returned. Nil Coronel Fap Francisco Secada Vignetta Airport (Iquitos. Peru).
20 May Wilmington Intl., N.C. 767 of MyTravel Flt: 43 1 hr into flt ex Orlando a/c diverted due to smoke and sparks in cockpit. Nil / 302 o/b Bound Glasgow. No further info. Pax arrived Glasgow 26 hours late.
22 May 0152Z Salt Lake City, Utah MD80 of Continental N14840 dragged its gear doors while landing 34L with an hydraulic failure. Nil Flight COA391.
22 May Baku, Turkmenistan C-130 of the Royal Air Force (landed Baku) Midair with one of two buzzing MIGs at 22,000ft over Turkmenistan enroute to Bucharest. Wing leading-edge holed and prop-blades embedded in fuselage. Nil Turkmenistan government has denied the incident happened. (ASW note: So that's where the Iraqi Information Minister went...)
22 May morning Pittston TWP 737 of Vacation Express Landed Lehigh Valley Intl with #1 engine shutdown for overtemperature. Nil / 81 pax 6 hour delay.
22 May 1245L Dhaka Bangladesh DC-10 of Biman Airways 5 pax found hiding in ceiling above flt BG079 toilet by cleaners were arrested. Nil Group were Sikhs from among 76 Indian transit pax (suspected smuggling op).
22 May 1346L Aberdeen, UK Jetstream 32 Turned back 13 mins out and circled for an hour with gear problems Nil / 12 o/b Nosegear was cocked 90 deg after extension (corrected on touchdown)
23 May 0730L Mwingi, Kenya LET410 of BlueBird Avn Enroute Mogadishu, 5Y-VVD crashed into an open field near a village. 2 fatal / 2 crew Cargo flt departed Nairobi at 0652L for Somalia with 1500kg of "khat."
23 May am hrs Heathrow UK 747-45E of EVA Air (and BA Maint) B-16462 A/c nose gear collapsed during hyd line checks due to incorrect pin insertion hole (inserted remotely via "feel"). Nil Also sustained damage when entry door connected with steps & a GPU contacted the fuselage during event.
23 May 1755L Indianapolis, Ind. EMB145 of Chautauqua Diverted in to Indianapolis due to an electrical fault causing smoke in cabin Nil / 44 o/b St. Louis, Mo., to Newark, N.J.
25 May 0001L Port Columbus, Oh. A300B4-203F of Express Net Cargo flt diverted in with indications of a fire in the cargo hold area Nil Philadelphia, Pa., to Dayton, Ohio. No evidence of a fire found.
25 May 1356L Near Mt Everest Twin Otter of Yeti Airlines Cargo flight crashed into a cliff-face at 11,600ft in Lamjura Pass (NE Nepal). 3 fatal / 3 crew 9N-AFD Kathmandu for Lukla. Heavy cloud in the pass at the time.
26 May morning Buffalo, N.Y. EMB145 of Continental Express Flt: 1856 2 ministers praying aloud for a safe flight were removed from their flight after it had taxied for Newark, N.J. Nil Prayer content & 911 references were causing great unease amongst other passengers. Released later by FBI.
27 May 0130Z Denver, Colo. CL-600 of Horizon Struck baggage cart with wing leading edge during taxi-in to the ramp. Nil / 60 pax N602QX. No further details.
27 May 0315L LAX Intl., Calif. MD-11 of World Airways 7 persons stranded for an hour as a/c tipped onto its tail during unloading, crushing a conveyor belt beneath it . Nil Crane called in to right the a/c without further damage (tail-stand not used to avoid the center of gravity change).
28 May Nashville, Tenn. MD-80 of AA Flt: AA306 Flt diverted after a lavatory bomb-note was found by flight attendant. Nil / 129 pax Dallas-Boston flt. Note claimed bomb was in cargo-hold. Fighters escorted.
