August 03, 2008 Watertown, SD Cessna 150L N16235 Pilot reported that began losing altitude while listening to automated weather service broadcast for destination airport. Did not notice altitude loss. Pilot decided to go to alternate airport, turned for alternate, and descended during the turn. One minor Noticed altitude loss, pulled back on the yoke, and impacted cornfield Pilot reported no mechanical malfunctions with a/c during the flight. Pilot's safety recommendation: "haze is deceptive."
August 04, 2008 N. Myrtle Beach, SC Piper PA-12 N3424M A/c registered operated by Barnstormer Flite Signs experienced total loss of engine power and ditched in Atlantic Ocean near Grand Strand Airport (CRE), North Myrtle Beach. No injuries Preliminary examination of a/c following recovery revealed no fuel in fuel tanks. They also did not contain any water. The gascolator contained an unquantified amount of fuel only, and the carburetor contained only water.
August 04, 2008 Oxford, MS Piper Aircraft PA-32R-301 N532MJ A/c crashed into bean field while attempting forced landing following loss of engine power No injuries Pilot was picking up a/c following engine overhaul. Took off and was heading for Bruce Campbell Field (MBO), Madison, MS. About 20 minutes into flight, engine went to idle. Pilot set up for best glide, and prepared for emergency landing.
August 05, 2008 Buffalo, ND Robinson R22 Beta N57UP Pilot said after passing over power lines, performed a steep descent toward field was spraying. A/c had a "high descent rate and excessive nose down attitude" during the spray run entry. Pilot was unable to arrest descent before main rotor speed dropped below safe operating speed. Run-on landing was made in field at 30 mph, but a/c pitched forward and main rotor impacted terrain. No injuries Main rotor, tail boom, fuselage, and landing skids damaged. Pilot reported that accident could have been prevented if he had performed a "less aggressive spray run entry."
August 05, 2008 Franklin, ME GT Ultralights Airborne Edge X A/c incurred substantial damage when crashed into waters of the Taunton Bay. The pilot did not hold a Federal Aviation Administration pilot license or a medical certificate. One fatality, one serious The ultralight was observed flying over the bay. At one point, pilot swirled down close to water. Moments later, wing of the utralight made contact with water and nosed over, impacting water hard. Bystanders came to aid of pilot and passenger.
August 06, 2008 Aurora, CO Enstrom 280FX N285SH A/c had just finished photo documentation flight in Denver International area. Pilot returning to Centennial Airport when noted fuel level was low. Shortly thereafter, engine lost power and pilot attempted an autorotation to an open field, No injuries resulting in hard landing. Pilot, departed with 19 gallons of fuel, and had calculated this represented one hour and 20 minutes of fuel.
August 07, 2008 Incline Village, NV Cessna 172S N15963 A/c impacted mountainous terrain under unknown circumstances. The last radio contact with pilot was approximately 2115, at which time the pilot was advised to contact Reno approach control for further flight following. Pilot did not check in with Reno approach control. One fatality According to operator, student pilot not given authorization to conduct the flight. He had received a total of 1.8 hours dual instruction at night, which took place during a single flight on August 6 , the night before the accident.
August 09, 2008 Juneau, AK Cessna 182 N9350X Float-equipped a/c departed from remote lake about 15 miles S of Juneau, en route to Juneau International Airport Seaplane Base. Two fatalities When a/c did not arrive in Juneau, was reported overdue. A/c remains missing and presumed to have crashed while en route to Juneau.
August 09, 2008 Boynton Beach, FL Unknown Apache Classic N3880A Amateur built Apache Classic weight shift aircraft experienced in-flight loss of control and impacted terrain shortly after takeoff from Willis Gliderport (FA44). One serious According FAA inspector-in-charge, flight departed from grass runway to the W with wind from the S. After becoming airborne, a/c rolled to the R. A/c circled to the S of airstrip and impacted trees while descending.
August 10, 2008 Rock Springs, WY Cessna R172K N758NH Cessna and a Cirrus collided in midair about five miles NW of Rock Springs-Sweetwater County Airport. Preliminary radar information provided by FAA ATC personnel indicates that Cessna was maneuvering NW of Rock Springs Airport Three fatalities and Cirrus was approaching airport from NW while descending on heading of about 120 degrees magnetic. Collision occurred about 10,000 feet mean sea level or about 3,500 feet above ground level.

August 12, 2008 South Easton, MA Beech G35 N4615D A/c operated by pilot as "Angel Flight 15 Delta" experienced an in-flight loss of control while maneuvering to re-intercept a localizer, and then crashed into a parking lot of a shopping center. Pilot-rated witness who was located .41 nautical mile and 288 degrees from the crash site reported hearing a low flying a/c, heading west to east, with high rpm. Ran outside but did not see a/c. Three fatalities Noise faded then returned, and witness observed a/c descending vertically out of clouds. Witness's first view of a/c was top of a/c. Did not recall if he saw landing gear, but did not see any smoke trailing the ai/c during the time he saw it. A/c spun 2.5 times to the left, went out of sight behind trees. Witness heard an impact and saw smoke.
August 13, 2008 Arcadia, FL Ercoupe 415-C N94339 A/c incurred substantial damage when collided with tree during takeoff from private airstrip. Witness said the pilot routinely flew into the property from Venice, FL, where he resided and had a hangar. One fatality Witness observed a/c depart toward west. During takeoff, it appeared to the witness that a/c encountered a downdraft causing it to lose altitude. Looked like pilot attempted to reestablish a climb, but was unable to clear oak tree. A/c clipped tree, entered an uncontrolled descent, and came to rest inverted on ground.
August 14, 2008 Sahuarita, AZ Cessna TR182 N4887R A/c collided with terrain. Pilot was flying to visit friend. One fatality Family members alerted FAA that a/c was overdue. FAA issued an alert notice (ALNOT). Search and Rescue personnel discovered wreckage on August 16, 2008.
August 15, 2008 Georgia Pass, CO Cessna 182T N487TC A/c destroyed when impacted terrain on Mount Guyot. Pilot and passengers departed SBS approximately 0835 MDT. ATC tapes showed a/c on radar from 0840 to 0902 MDT. Four fatalities Last radar contact was along V328 near Green Mountain Reservoir at 11,200 feet, approximately thirty miles north of accident site. No record of recorded voice communications between pilot and ATC.
August 16, 2008 San Francisco, CA Boeing 777-300 B-16710 Eva Air 17 being pushed back from gate when mechanic was pinned under left nose gear at San Francisco International. One serious According to airport ops personnel, Eva Air mechanic and Swissport ramp employee pushing flight back from gate. Tow bar was removed, a/c came forward, and mechanic was pinned under left nose gear.
August 17, 2008 Morton, MS Ayres S2R-T15 N4015P A/c incurred substantial damage when collided with trees while approaching an application area. The a/c was located north of intended crop. One fatality Was on south heading when collided with trees. A/c's propeller cut several trees and branches during descent. A/c separated into several sections during collision sequence before coming to rest on ground.
August 17, 2008 Rhinebeck, NY Roberto P. Garcia Nieuport 24bis N5246 A/c destroyed when impacted trees and terrain while maneuvering near Old Rhinebeck Airport (NY94). According to FAA inspector, accident flight was two a/c aerial demonstration of WWI vintage aircraft simulating a "dogfight." Other a/c participating in demo was Fokker DR-1. Entire fligh conducted about 300 feet AGL. One fatality As Fokker turned back around toward show line, pilot noticed Nieuport beginning left turn. Fokker pilot looked away for a moment, and next saw Nieuport in "what looked to be a three turn spin to left," before disappeared into trees below.
August 18, 2008 Bethel, AK Cessna 207A N9935M A/c collided with another Cessna while taxiing on ramp at Bethel Airport. Both a/c operated by Flight Alaska, Yute Air, Anchorage, AK. Operator's director of operations and pilot of N9935M said both a/c were in vicinity of company hangar when front of right wing of N9935M collided with trailing edge of the left wing of N7380U. No injuries N9935M taxiing for takeoff, and N7380U was stopped on ramp, prior to taxiing for takeoff. Pilot of N9935M said was taxing too fast, and didn't see other a/c in time to avoid hitting it.

August 18, 2008 Bonners Ferry, ID Hughes 369D N622PB A/c collided with terrain. USFS was operating a/c as public use flight. USFS safety officer said pilot picking up firefighters and had landed on pinnacle. After loading a/c, pilot began to depart and 10 to 15 feet above horizon and approximately 30 to 40 feet above trees, the No injuries pilot was having difficulty maintaining altitude. Performed 180-degree turn back to departure point and landed.. During landing, tail rotor drive shaft sheared.
August 20, 2008 Madrid, Spain Boeing MD-82 EC-HFP Spanair Flight JK5022, crashed during take-off from Madrid Barajas International Airport. Flight was destined for Las Palmas De Gran Canaria Airport, in Canary Islands. 154 fatalities, 18 serious A/c was destroyed and 154 fatalities reported. There were a total of 172 people on board.
August 20, 2008 Springerville, AZ Piper PA-28-180 N5316L A/c sustained substantial damage in collision with terrain shortly after takeoff and one mile north of the Springerville Municipal Airport. Two fatalities Witnesses reported a/c became airborne about midfield during takeoff from Runway 03. Witness stated that shortly after liftoff a/c appeared to be flying "sideways" when suddenly rolled to right, pitched to nose-low attitude and impacted terrain.
August 22, 2008 Kongiganak, AK Cessna 207 N17GN A/c operated by Hageland Aviation, Anchorage, AK as scheduled commuter Flight 8066 overran runway during an aborted takeoff. Two minor  
August 22, 2008 Iliamna, AK Robinson R44 N291VB Pilot positioning a/c to move crew from drilling test site. As passed 70-foot high drill tower and 30 feet above ground, heard bang and lost control of a/c, which immediately became uncontrollable and descended rapidly ground, where caught fire. No injuries Drilling crew previously stripped approximately 6,000 feet of 3/8-inch thick cable from the drum at the base of drill tower, over top of tower, and onto ground. Pilot unaware of these activities and not see wire until after collided with it.
August 22, 2008 North Las Vegas, NV Killgore M/Killgore K Velocity 173RG N415MK A/c collided with residential building in North Las Vegas Pilot and two people on ground killed. Post impact fire destroyed a/c and partially burned residence. Local flight departed North Las Vegas Airport. Shortly after takeoff the air traffic controller observed that the airplane was not gaining altitude. The controller asked the pilot if he needed assistance, to which the pilot responded, Three fatalities "I'm going down, I'm going down." Canard configuration, four-seat, low-wing, retractable gear a/c, issued Special Airworthiness Certificate on March 9, 2008. It was powered by a Lycoming IO-360-C1C, engine and equipped with a three bladed MT-Propeller, model MTV-18-B.
Aug. 24, 2008 Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan Boeing 737-219 EX-009 A/c crashed after departing Bishkek, for Tehran-Mehrabad Airport (THR) in Iran. Crew was attempting to return to Manas International (FRU) after reporting technical problems ten minutes after departure. At least 68 fatalities Flight reportedly carried 83 passengers and a seven-member crew. Iran Aseman Airlines Flight 6875 was carried out by Itek Air.
Aug. 24, 2008 Moab, Utah Beech A100 King Air N601PC A/c crashed three miles S of Canyonlands Field Airport (CNY). Ten fatalities Nine passengers worked at a dermatology clinic.
Aug. 24, 2008 Cabanas, Zacapa, Guatemala Cessna CE-208 Caravan Reg; Unknown Operated by Aereo Ruta Maya airlines. Transporting U.S. humanitarian workers when crashed in field about 60 miles E of Guatemala City. 10 fatalities Reported that fatal accident occurred 45 minutes after takeoff, with pilots reporting engine problems and attempting emergency landing.
August 25, 2008 Curico, Chile Beech BE-55 CC-PBY A/c collided with private residence while maneuvering in vicinity of Curico. Three fatalities Pilot and two passengers killed. The Flight originated from San Javier Las Mercedes, Chile.
Aug. 25, 2008 Davao City, Philippines PAF C-130 Philippine AF a/c bound for Iloilo City lost contact with ATC shortly after takeoff.   Crashed into waters off Davao City. First PAF C-130 to crash.
Aug. 26, 2008 Kufrah Airport, Libya Boeing 737-200 Reg: unknown Sudanese (Sun Air) jetliner hijacked after takeoff from Nyala (UYL). Diverted to Kufrah. No injuries Hijackers eventually surrendered.
Aug. 26, 2008 Montreal, Canada Air France Boeing 747 Reg: unavail A/c from Paris overshot runway on landing at Montreal's Trudeau International Airport. No injuries  
Aug. 27, 2008 in Reading, PA Cessna 172, registration: N54020 Runway incursion occurred at Reading Regional Airport/Carl A. Spaatz Field (RDG). Tower controller offered pilot Runway 18 and pilot accepted. Runway 18 had been closed for approximately four weeks for construction in safety area (NOTAM07/003). No injuries Controller cleared the pilot to land and the pilot landed on runway 18.

Aug. 28, 2008 Atlantic Ocean Boeing B747-400 Reg. unavail Two commercial jetliners came within one minute lateral separation over Atlantic Ocean in non-radar environment where 15 minutes of lateral separation is required. No injuries Transaero Flight 554, a Russian Boeing 747-400, and Delta Air Lines Flight 485, Boeing 737-800, en route from Kennedy Int'l to Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, came within zero feet vertical and one minute lateral separation at altitude of 33,000 feet about 179 miles N of San Juan, PR. The B747 descended 200-300 feet after receiving alert from TCAS.

Aug. 28, 2008 Fresno, CA Piper PA-46 Reg: unavail Commuter jet narrowly missed GA aircraft during nighttime landing at Fresno Yosemite International Airport. Piper PA-46 landed on runway 29R. Before a/c had exited runway, tower controller cleared SkyWest Canadair CRJ2 commuter jet to land on same runway. No injuries CRJ2 pilot saw Piper and veered to right side of runway, missing a/c by an estimated 15 feet, wingtip to wingtip.

Aug. 30, 2008 Toacaso, Equador Boeing 737-291 YV102T Venezuelan carrier Conviasa's B-737 had been stored in Caracas. Three fatalities A/c being ferried to Latacunga, Equador, for new owner. A/c crashed in mountainous terrain.
Aug. 31, 2008 Coba, Mexico Cessna 208 Caravan XA-UEJ A/c took off from Cancun (CUN) on flight to Campeche (CPE). Two fatalities Radio contract lost. One of pilots said via cell phone that mechanical problems. A/c found next day in Coba.
Sept. 1, 2008 Congo Democratic Republic Beechcraft 1900C-1 Reg: ZS-OLD? A/c operated on behalf of Air Serv Int'l departed Kinsasha on humanitarian flight to Goma (GOM). A/c approached Bukavu in severe 17 fatalities weather. Flew into steep ridge, some 15km NW of Bukava.
Sept. 1, 2008 Columbus, OH Convair CV-580 N587X Air Tahoma A/c took off from Columbus-Rickenbacker (LCK) on flight to Mansfield (MFD) in Ohio. Three fatalities A/c crashed in cornfield while returning to airport.
Sept. 1, 2008 Camarillo, CA Piper Cub Reg; Unknown Pilot of banner-towing a/c died when a/c crashed shortly after takeoff at Camarillo Airport, 50 miles NW of One fatality Los Angeles.
