06 Jan. Fukuoka, Japan MD-81 of JAS Aborted t/off due to heavy engine vibrations. 18 out of 25 JAS aircraft found to have similar problems. Nil JAS MD-81/87 a/c now grounded because of compressor cracks in P&W engines (and missing blades).
07 Jan. Kagoshima, Japan MD-87 of JAS Returned to land after experiencing severe inflight engine vibrations Nil Third incident stemming from fleet-wide cracks in P&W engines.
09 Jan. 1440Z Gander, Newfdld Beech1900D of Labrador Awys C-GLHO heard/felt thump after t/off and on landing found rt flap dented & one inch missing from RH prop blade. Nil Flt LAL7620's air-stair door-handle had detached (failures of retainer ring, roll pin and the shaft-pin was sheared).
09 Jan. 1435Z Toronto, Ontario CL600-2B19(RJ) of Comair COM5886 declared an emerg with stuck flaps on approach to Toronto. Nil N467CA ferried Cincinnati for FECU change (flap electronic control unit).
13 Jan. Philipsburg, Pa. SAAB SF340 of US Airways Express Pittsburgh to State College, Pa. flight landed at Mid-State Regional instead of University Park (20nm further on). Nil / 8 pax Operated by Shuttle America (who kept mum). Pilot maintained sense of humor: "Here's one for the news"
14 Jan. 1321Z Goose Bay Newfdld C208B Caravan of Labrador Awys LAL523 pitched up sharply after autopilot deselected and elevator trim found to be jammed. Landed flapless. Nil C-FPEX enrt Nain to Postville. Declared emergency and diverted to Goose. Icing of both actuator shafts.
15 Jan. 2255L New York JFK 767-300 of BA Flt: BA1502 Returned to New York (JFK) after a hydraulic failure enroute. Nil JFK-Manchester flight.
15 Jan. 1929Z Edmonton, Alberta MD-83 of Jetsgo Corp. C-GKLJ JGO149 reptd a hyd problem airborne and on landing, smoke in the cabin. Nil Hyd leak in APU created blue mist in cabin and irritated pax eyes.
16 Jan. 2112Z Calgary, Alberta MD-83 of Jetsgo Corp. C-GKLJ JGO196 was a repeat of 15 Jan incident above. Returned with smoke. Nil / 113 o/b Smoke/fumes became heavy passing 4000ft on departure (residual fluid).
16 Jan. 2006Z Vancouver BC 747-300 of JAL Flt: JAL11 A/c made missed appch 26R and decl'd emerg for high-speed flapless landing. Nil Flap asymmetry trip.
16 Jan. 0140Z Moncton New Brun 767-333 of BA Flt: BAW1502 JFK-Manchester UK flt reptd hydraulic emerg and ret'd to JFK. Nil From point 120 miles east of Moncton.
16 Jan. evening Lisbon Intl, Portugal A320 of Air Luxor C2-082 Unable to pressurize after departure and returned. Nil Lisbon-Sao Tome flight. Stuck outflow valve?
16 Jan. 0255Z 30NW of Rochester Beech1900D of Air Georgia GGN7458 declared smoke in cabin emerg, landing 33R Toronto. Nil C-GHGA rear vent blower fan failure. Toronto-Manchester NH flight.
17 Jan. 2234Z Winnipeg, Manitoba A319-114 of Air Canada ACA167 170nm N reptd an electrical problem & 4 mins later, an emerg for smoke. Nil 44mins later landed Winnipeg r/way 31. Aft lav water pump overheated.
17 Jan. Prague, Czech. A310-300 of CSA. Flt: OK050 New York bound flt returned after being unable to retract u/c fully. Nil No further details.
17 Jan. Surabaya, Indonesia 747 of Saudia Aircraft skidded off the runway at Juanda A/P on landing for Hajji p/up Nil Another a/c called in to transport the Hajjis. Aircraft slightly damaged.
17 Jan. 1700L Pelee Island,Ontario C208B Caravan of Georgian Express C-FAGA Single-engine commuter aircraft crashed after take-off from an island resort on Lake Erie (in freezing rain). 10 fatal / 10 o/b Operator Georgian Express grounded by Transport Canada during an investigation into its operations.
18 Jan. 0510L Rapid City, SD CL-600 2B19 of SkyWest SKW3855 made a hard landing, clipping its left wing on the runway. Nil / 35 o/b N595SW heavy with ice on landing off ILS in 1/4ml vis (in freezing fog).
18 Jan. Shannon, Eire 767-300 of Delta Flight DL27 Atlanta-bound flight diverted into Shannon after a bomb-threat note. Nil / 147 pax Teenage German male arrested (Frankfurt-Atlanta, Ga. flight).
19 Jan. 1005L Adelaide, Australia A330-300 of QANTAS Flt: QF485 Melbourne-Perth flt diverted into Adelaide with pax sickened by fumes. Recurrence of a prior Sunday incident. 9 pax / 12 crew & 274 pax 9 pax hospitalized. No statement as yet on cause of fumes on their newly introduced aircraft.
19 Jan. (evening) Valletta, Malta A320 of Air Malta KM642 9H-ABQ struck an electricity pylon while taxiing out -and pylon fell on it. Nil / 27 pax / 6cru Fuselage top extensively crushed by large fallen pylon (see imagery at link).
19 Jan. Hahn Intl, Germany DC-10-30F of Aeroflot VP-BDG exp'd eng fire in reverse on landing & overran end in heavy snow. Nil Slightly damaged. Poor visibility in snow on landing.
20 Jan. Whenuapai, Auck 757 of RNZAF (training flight) VIP a/c landed with nosewheel indicating unsafe after exp trouble. lowering it Nil / 5 o/b Lowered manually and landed safely after 50 mins of circling & cycling.
20 Jan. 1500L Houston, Texas MD-80 of Delta Returned to land after exp hyd leak (and nose gear doors failed to close). Nil / 120 o/b Houston-Atlanta flight out of Bush Intercontinental A/P.
21 Jan. 0745L Pueblo, Colo. Falcon 2000 Reg: N200JE Ran off the end runway 8, wing struck snow berm and right gear collapsed. Nil Moderate damage. Landed in blowing snow.
21 Jan. Tegucigalpa Hond A320 of Mexicana Caracas-Mexico City a/c diverted after pax began having convulsions. 1 inj Landed Ceiba A/P. 70 heroin caps removed fm Venezuelan pax stomach.
22 Jan. 0949L Newcastle UK MD80 of SAS Flt: 0539 Crew sent Mayday call & diverted after cockpit filled with smoke. Nil / 51pax 6crew Copenhagen-Manchester flight.
