25 July Malaga Spain Bound for Asturias 757 of Iberia Humanitarian captain returned to Malaga after 20 mins due to the failure of heating in a pressurized cargo hold. Nil To save the life of a dog in the unheated hold (otherwise ? -35� C). Dog boarded. Plaudits to the captain.
4 Aug 1205Z Big Rapids, Mich Caravan C208 Reg: N1037N Cargo door warning came on at 7000ft, a/c returned and found damage. Nil Left horizontal stabilizer leading edge stove in.
5 Aug 1648L Rio Negro Venez CASA 212A of Armada de Venez On landing , overran, crossed a road, a fence and ditch and subsided in a field. Nil Stormy weather (at San Carlos de Rio Negro airport). Reg: ARBV-0206
6 Aug 1243L New Delhi A320 of Indian Airlines Emergency landing back at Indira Ghandi Airport (reported a cargo fire). Nil /82 o/b Delhi-Bhubneshwar sector. Alarm was false.
7 Aug pm hrs Viru Viru Puerto Rico (VVI Intl A/P) 767-300ER of LAB Bolivia (Lease Pegasus) On finals for VVI from Miami a large crack- crease (circumferential) appeared aft of cockpit (see imagery).
Buckle had origins in unrepaired fwd fuselage cracks & some nose-gear first landings at VVI (Airframe No. CP2426 or CP2425).
7 Aug am hrs Manchester, UK A321 of MyTravel Ibiza-Manchester flight lost nose wheel steering and had to be towed from runway to ramp. Nil / 227 o/b Lost a hydraulic system 40nms out on approach - nose gear remained self-centering.
7 Aug 1657Z Graz A/P, Austria RJ-85 of Lufthansa Reg: D-AVRO LH5386 lost flight-controls (jammed) & followed SOP break-out procedure enabling the captain's controls (only). Nil / 58 pax + 4 crew http://www.caa.co.uk/docs /33/FACTOR200308.PDF (Repeat of similar incident to same a/c 3 years earlier - in the UK)
7 Aug 1845Z Kujjuaq Quebec 727-100 of First Air FAB864 stopped on the taxiway and evac'd pax after advising smoke in cabin. Nil No further details.
8 Aug Mae Hong Son ATR-72 of Thai Airways TG198 deptd r/way side on landing, nose-wheel collapsed & pax evac'd. Nil / 28 +4 Thailand, near Burmese border (650km north of Bangkok).
8 Aug Eindhoven, Holland A300 of FlyAir TC-FLF A/c right main gear deptd the taxiway whilst taxiing in and a/c was bogged. Nil Flying ops for Sultan Air (cutting corners can put you out to grass).
8 Aug 0222Z 30 W of Cymon, Can. 767-333 of Delta DAL32 advised an abnormal situation and reqstd a diversion to JFK. Nil Reg: N1611B. Problem was electrical.
8 Aug 1115L Zurich, Switzerland DC-10-30 of JAT Damaged getting underway after push-back and hitting the towbar. Nil YU-AMB taken out of service for repairs.
9 Aug 1650Z Goose Bay, Labrador 767-209 of Delta DAL149 divtd into Goose with fumes in the cabin fm pt 65nm east of Goose. Nil/197 o/b Reg: N199DN enrt Rome to New York, landed Goose Bay 1708Z
9 Aug Kansai Intl., Japan 777-200 of NWA Enroute Osaka to Taipei, pilot forced to return after shutting down an engine. Nil Flt: NW069. No further details.
09 Aug 0320Z Las Vegas, Nev. Citation 501 Reg: N110JA Aborted t/off after right main tire blew and fire started in right wheel. Nil / 9 o/b Fire was quickly extinguished (was headed to Sacramento, Calif.)
10 Aug 2227Z Grand Canyon, Ariz. DHC-6 of Scenic Airlines SCE47 hit n/wheel first, spun around, hit sign and came to rest on the infield. Nil / 18pax+1 crew Applause was muted - but aftermath was scenic and tourist cameras abounded.
10 Aug 1500L Melbourne, Australia 717 of JetStar Took a bird on take-off for Hobart and returned following #1 engine surging. Nil / 55 pax Operational hazard. Engine change required due to compressor damage.
10 Aug 1120L Frankfurt, Germany RJ-100 of Swiss HB-IXU Explosion in #2 eng of KX-725 at FL290 took out #1 as well (shrapnel). Nil / 51 + 5 crew Fire-warning #1 followed the #2 failure (after 5 secs of #2 vibration).
10 Aug Brussels, Belgium Avro RJ85 of SN Brussels Flt 2909 returned after a pax's cat escaped, entered c'pit following food delivery and clawed F/O. 1 inj / 62 o/b Captain survived and was able to conduct a cat- free approach.
11 Aug Osaka, Japan 777-300 of JAL Flt: 1720 Divtd in after lightning strike at 12Kft caused a 24" crack in a cockpit windo. Nil / 214 o/b Enroute Fukuoka to Haneda (Tokyo).
11 Aug 1942L Iwo Jima, Japan S3B Viking of VS35 Carrier-launched Viking struck 2520ft volcanic pinnacle on 2.4sq mile island. 4 fatal / 4 o/b Launched fm USS Stennis & struck Kita Iwo Jima (45nm N of Iwo Jima).
11 Aug Freetown Sierra Leone 737-2R6B of Air Guinea 3X-GCB took off in rain & ditched off the r'way end Lungi A/P - in a swamp. Minor inj / 126 o/b Enrt Banjul Yundum Gambia. Engine broke loose after wingtip hit runway.
11 Aug 0142L Anchorage, Alaska 747-400 of KAL Seoul - JFK flt diverted after receiving an inflight bomb threat. Nil Hoax for Flt KE001
12 Aug 2155Z Houston, Texas Bush Intercontinental 777-200 of BA Flt BA2024 Gatwick bound G-VIID ret'd with a left eng fire (trailing thick smoke) and reported smoke in the cockpit. Nil / 133 o/b Turned about after 15 mins outbound & landed 15L after 30mins. GE-90 fire was then extinguished by ARFF.
13 August 1250L Cincinnati Nth, Ky. CV580 of Air Tahoma (DHL subcharter) NV586P crashed on appch on a golf course after reporting eng trouble. 1 fatal / 1 serious Flt 185 arriving from Memphis & trying for runway 36R.
