10 May 0436L Newark NJ Airbus A310 of FEDEX A/c took off on closed runway 4L over construction crew. Nil / 3 crew Runway was unlit. ATC moved to new TWR facility the week before.
14 May North Atlantic 767-333 of Air Canada C-FMWU Flt846 advised smoke in cockpit and pulled HF C/B. Nil #1 HF Transmitter replaced at destination Munich (origin Toronto).
22 May 0056Z Toronto Canada L188 Electra freighter of Zantop N5512 ZAN670 diverted Toronto from pt 15nm NW after declaring an emerg for smoke. Nil Montreal for Toledo Express Ohio. Elect Fire was behind capt's seat (charring and fire damage found).
23 May 2200L 767 of US Airways Flt: 306 Landed Halifax after stbd engine failed 80 miles abeam. Nil / 185 on board Enroute Philadelphia to Dublin. Pax had 6 hrs delay in Halifax.
23 May 1130L Kenai Alaska C-46 Commando Decl emerg due to engine fire and diverted Kenai Municipal. Nil Enroute King Salomon to Anchorage, Alaska.
23 May 0158Z Ottawa -Calgary Intl Alberta A320 of Air Canada Flt: ACA1185 Reg: C-FDST Elevator aileron computer (ELAC) 1 and 2 pitch fault and jammed stabilizer messages. Control reverted to direct law. ARFF requested. Nil A/c landed at Calgary Intl Runway 28. Trimmable horizontal stabilizer (THS) actuator changed & satis function check carried out. Similar incident 25 Apr same aircraft.
24 May 2040L New Delhi Intl 737 of Air India (army charter) Precautionary landing with burst tire. Nil / 77pax Leh to New Delhi flight.
24 May (night) Amarillo Texas 737 of SWA Flt: SWA2066 Departed r/way 4 in strong x'wind gust and n/gear failed. Nil / 63pax & 5 crew Runway lights also damaged. Flt arrived from Las Vegas at 0239L.
25 May Luanda Angola 727 of Airangol (no flight-plan or callsign) A/c stolen at night by lone individual. Police are looking for a silver 727 with blue and white stripes (poss US rego) Nil A/c had been parked for a year and disappeared without comms. Possible repo - thought not to be a terrorist related acquisition.
25 May 1040L Kansai Intl A/P DC-10-40 of Japan Airlines Flt: JL701 One hr out, returned to land after eng instrument failures. Nil #3 EGT gauge failure.
26 May 0145GMT Bishkek Kyrgyzstan to Zaragoza Spain YAK42D of Mediterranean Airlines (Ukrainian) (Sredizemnomorske) aka UM Air Reg: UR42352 Hit a mountain at 0445L near Macka (30mls S of Black Sea Port of Trabzon - a planned 2nd refuel stop in Turkey) after leaving Kabul. Flew the VOR appch to r/way 29. 75 fatal / 62 troops and 13 crew 41 army / 21 airforce Controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) during 3rd approach attempt to land at fogged-in Trabzon Turkey. 26 May 1548Z Winnipeg Manitoba A320 of Air Canada Flt: ACA170 Two articles departed the a/c on t/off r/way 13 Winnipeg. Crew cont'd to Toronto. Nil Parts were covers for left turbine (left on L wing during maint and not re-installed)
26 May 1428L Bridgeport Conn. C414 Chancellor Reg: N1234 Decl min fuel and ditched 9.86mls SW of Bridgeport. 1 with hypothermia Orlando Fla. - White Plains NY. Pilot rescued by USCG & a/c sunk.
27 May Larnaca Cyprus-Manchester UK A321 of BMI Flt: BD8412 A/c severely damaged by lightning strike and hail at 34,000ft over Germany. Nil / 208pax Radome shattered - imagery at http://www.iasa.com.au/hail.htm.
27 May 2148L F'furt-Portland A340-300 of Lufthansa DLH468 D-AIGK blew left main gear tire on landing. Nil Damage to wing trailing edge.
28 May Mt Everest Base Camp MI-17 helo (chartered support) Crashed on approach after a hard turn at 17,400 ft. elevation. 2 fatal / 4injured Density altitude calculated to be as high as 22,000ft - thin air for helos. http://www.iasa.com.au/hail.htm
28 May 0915L Dublin - Gatwick BAe-146 of Aer Lingus Deptd 0800 and turned back at 0820 with hydraulic failure. Nil / 55pax & 5 crew No further details.
28 May 0640L Detroit Mich. MU-2 of Epps Air Reg: N755AF Struck runway edge light on approach in low vis/low ceiling. Nil / 2 Cincinnati-Detroit flight landing r/way 15.
29 May Tullamarine Melbourne (Victoria) to Launceston Tasmania 717 of QANTAS Flt: QF1737 Reg: VH-VQI 20 mins into flt hijacker armed with 2 wooden knives stormed the cockpit but was over-powered by two F/A's and pax A/c turned back. Cockpit not security door equipped. 47pax aboard 2 crew inj/ 6 crew Also carrying aerosol accelerant and lighter. Not thought to be terrorist. 40 y.o. Melb man detained (appears to be demented religious zealot). One F/A with serious stab wounds to neck, one w/ minor wounds to face.
