Soon after take off from Kinshasa�s international airport, the Antonov's right engine shed its prop. The An-26 then quickly lost height and crashed into a residential neighborhood. Burning fuel set ablaze a number of small houses in the local shantytown. All on board together with about 15 people on the ground are reported dead. |

At the time the aircraft was operating a mixed cargo-passenger flight. Nearly 300 people in a shantytown market outside Kinshasa, Zaire, were killed on 08 Jan 96 when the captain of an Antonov An-32B made a late decision to abort the take-off, and the aircraft overran the runway and ploughed through the crowds on market day. Transport minister, Remy Henry Kuseyo, was sacked after the accident. |
