Focus on Safety Issues, says IFALPA
The International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations (IFALPA) says Brazilian authorities should drop their criminal probe into the deadly midair collision last September involving a pair of American pilots. The fatal accident involved a Gol Airlines Boeing 737-800 and an Embraer Legacy 600. All 154 aboard the airliner were killed, but the Legacy flight deck crew survived. IFALPA has a number of serious concerns with the government’s present actions. It opposes the indictment and possible criminal prosecution of the pilots of the Legacy aircraft and a number of air traffic controllers. It believes a legislative enquiry along with a federal police investigation running in parallel with the independent accident investigation obscures the benefits of a proper accident investigation. IFALPA calls on the Brazilian Government to suspend the legislative inquiry and the Justice Ministry to adjourn criminal proceedings.
