Manufacturers Target Australian Market

By Emma Kelly, Australia and Pacific Correspondent

Helicopter manufacturers will be showing their products at this week’s Rotortech 2014 show, which takes place on Australia’s Sunshine Coast from May 24-25, keen to gain a larger slice of the booming Australian helicopter market.

Bell Helicopter’s local representative Hawker Pacific is taking a Bell 505 Jet Ranger X mock-up to the show in what will be the type’s first appearance in the country. The Bell 505 redefines the short light single product class with its advanced technology, unparalleled levels of comfort and multi-mission capabilities, says Hawker Pacific. It features a Garmin G1000H cockpit, five forward-facing seats, 75/25 split clamshell doors for easy access and powered by the Turbomeca Arrius 2R engine.

“We are very excited to introduce the all-new, next generation Bell 505 Jet Ranger X to the Australian market. The aircraft boasts unique multi-mission capabilities and best-in-class cabin volume previously unseen in the short light single class,” says Tony Jones, Hawker Pacific’s chief operating officer Asia.

Meanwhile, Australian Aerospace, the local subsidiary for Airbus Helicopters, will be at the show in force, with six of its helicopters on display. These will include the new T2 variant of the EC130 and an AS350B3 Squirrel. The AS350 has proved a strong performer in the country’s light utility sector, while the EC130 is popular with local private and tourism operators. The Australian defense market has also proved a good one for the company, with 28 out of 47 MRH90s delivered to the Australian Defence Force to date.

Australia “has always had a strong interest in helicopters and current sales performances are above our expectations. We have seen continued growth after the global financial crisis and we anticipate the local market will continue to grow,” says Jens Goennemann, chief executive officer Australian Aerospace.
