DOT to Cut Cap at LGA
Stalled from conducting slot auctions, the Department of Transportation said it will further cut flights at La Guardia as part of congestion reduction efforts. Outgoing DOT Secretary Peters announced plans to lower the airport’s cap from 75 to 71 per hour but such a cap would be voluntary unless American, US Airways and Delta agreed to participate. Airlines have 10 days to comment on the proposal which would become effective in April and end with October 24. Delta has already said it is willing to cut flights to help with congestion. DOT expects delays to go down 41 percent and save $178 million.
