Cessna's New M2, Sovereign+ Begin Deliveries

Woodrow Bellamy III

Cessna has started to deliver two of its latest business jets, the Citation M2 and the New Citation Sovereign+ following FAA certification of both aircraft, the Wichita, Kan. manufacturer said Friday Dec. 20.

The M2 and Sovereign+ are just two of six new aircraft that Cessna announced expected to bring to the market in 2013, including the new Citation X, Grand Caravan EX, 182 Turbo Skylane JT-A and the TTx.

Cessna will look to use the new jets to recover from a third quarter where the company saw revenues drop by $185 million over the previous year and posted a $23 million loss.

M2

The M2, with a list price of $4.395 million is light jet based on Cessna's CitationJet platform powered by the new Williams FJ44 engines. Cessna equipped the M2 with Garmin G3000 touchscreen avionics with multifunction displays and split-screen capability.

Approved for single-pilot flying, the M2 has a range of 1,300 nautical miles and a maximum cruise speed of 400 knots true airspeed (kta).

“The Citation M2 is a versatile aircraft that fits many markets and missions, attracting owner-operators looking for an advanced, innovative aircraft of this size, capability, and value. Our launch customer, Stuart Woods, represents this type of customer: owners moving up from their Citation Mustang.  Further, many new M2 owners are upgrading from a turboprop, while still others are moving laterally to a newer, same-size business jet," said Brad Thress, senior vice president of business jets at Cessna.

Sovereign+

The Citation Sovereign+ midsize business jet was first announced at NBAA 2012, with the first flight occurring just six months later in April 2013.

Cessna added the + to further differentiate the upgraded aircraft from its predecessor the original Citation Sovereign. Upgrades on the Sovereign+ include the Garmin G5000 avionics, winglets and the new Pratt & Whitney Canada PW306D engines which provide 5,852 pounds of thrust.

The range of the Sovereign+ is 3,000 nautical miles, and the maximum cruise speed is 458 kta with a direct climb altitude to 45,000 feet.

"We increased the full fuel payload, added winglets, cutting-edge Garmin G5000 avionics, auto throttles and outstanding performance for hundreds of dollars less per hour than any aircraft in its category. Our customers are looking forward to seeing the aircraft with winglets, giving it a distinct appearance as well as an aerodynamic boost that means 150 additional nautical miles of range," said Thress.
