Mesa Has Uncontained Engine Failure

After a Mesa Airlines Bombardier CRJ200LR experienced an uncontained engine failure, the National Transportation Safety Board opened an investigation of the General Electric CF24-3B1 engines, which have been the subject of several recommendations lately. The incident occurred Thursday evening on Flight 2985 headed to Phoenix from Denver. The engine shed a fan blade, prompting the crew to declare an emergency and return to Denver. There were no injuries and no evacuation was necessary. Three GE representatives have also been assigned to support the investigation. In-service GE engines of the type number more than 2,000, according to the company, which added this is the first such incident for the engine.
