Supply Side
Bombardier
While Bombardier [BBD] delivered five more airplanes in its fiscal year that ended Jan. 31, 2005, compared to the 324 delivered the previous 12 months, the Canadian firm delivered 32 fewer regional aircraft. It delivered 100 CRJ 200s compared to 153 the previous year; 78 CRJ 700/900s compared to 62; six Q300s compared to nine; and 16 Q400s compared to nine. The company recorded a 44 percent increase in the number of business jet deliveries from 89 to 128.
Pratt & Whitney
In about 18 months, Pratt & Whitney will be selling Cloudlink, a new wireless broadband system. The system will permit airlines to provide passengers with video-on-demand, live television and Internet service. The same system will enable the airlines to manage the "health" of the aircraft and engine systems. Sensors will relay "real time" information on the aircraft and its systems to ground stations via the same broadband network.
VLM
One of England's largest regionals, VLM now operates a website the enables passengers to book tickets while on-line. The carrier hopes to book 25 percent of its flights via the Web site. The new system was designed by Emakina, a Web builder, and SITA.
G&T Conveyor
Elite Line Services, a unit of G&T Conveyor Co., recently purchased Amerbridge, an Indianapolis-based service provider of passenger boarding bridges. The combination is designed to offer airports a full slate of installation, maintenance and rehabilitation services. The sale price was not disclosed.
Soloy
Soloy is rolling out a Rolls-Royce engine enhancement for the Soloy Cessna 206. The Rolls-Royce B17F/2 engine has been modified to enable the Cessna 206 to operate off of shorting runways and to fly at higher altitudes.
AAR
In a $7.7 million deal, AAR [AIR] sold its engine component repair business to Chromalloy Gas Turbine, a unit of Sequa Corp. [SQAA]. As part of the deal, AAR will enter into a multi-year part supply agreement.
Aero Pneudraulics
Aero Pneudraulics, a supplier of overhaul and repair services, has hired Ruud Kleinendorst as its European representative. He will be based in The Netherlands. He was most recently the marketing director at Reckon Aircraft.
Dallas Airmotive
Dallas Airmotive has hired Ronald Worley Jr. as its new director of sales for the Rolls-Royce Sprey/Tay programs. The former OEM account director at Rockwell Collins, Worley will be based in Dallas.
Embry-Riddle
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has hired Martin Schaaf as it new executive director of the commercial airline pilot training program based at the Daytona Beach campus. He has 30 years' experience at Boeing [BA] and Northwest Airlines [NWAC] as a flight-training specialist.
Textron Lycoming
A Texas jury has ordered Textron Lycoming to pay a $96 million settlement for building a crankshaft that broke 24 times between 2000 and 2003 causing 12 deaths in Cessnas, Pipers and other airplanes equipped with Lycoming engines. (
