XJT Avoids Mexican Grounding
Mexico’s Communications and Transportation Department threatened to ground all of ExpressJet's Mexican flights operated on behalf of both Delta and Continental, because, according to the Associated Press, it could not provide proof airspace fees had been paid. The department threatened to take the same action against Mexican regional Aero California. Mexican federal authorities held a press conference Thursday, however, saying ExpressJet had complied or was in the process of complying and that there had been no disruption for either Continental or Delta passengers.
In a joint statement with Continental, ExpressJet said that it was advised of a possible suspension of service by ExpressJet to Mexico owing to a disagreement regarding an approximate $4.5 million potential tax liability in connection with use of air space.
Continental and XJT disagreed with the department’s assessment, saying they believe that they have conducted their operations in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations and that this matter is a misunderstanding.
