Traffic Roundup - May
- Still struggling with its bankruptcy, Comair's available seat miles plunged 23.3 percent to 597.2 million while Revenue Passenger Miles (RPMs) dropped 15.3 percent to 448.1 million. However, load factor rose 7.1 points, to 75 percent. Year to date, Comair passenger enplanements were down 13.9 percent to 43,102,107 with a load factor of 71.9 percent, up six points. RPMs dropped 16.9 percent to 2 million while ASMs dropped 23.9 percent to 2.84 million. Comair is a unit of Delta Air Lines (DALQ).
- Delta Connection contract carriers - ASA, Chautauqua, SkyWest, Shuttle America and Freedom Airlines - flew 979.1 million RPMs in May, up from the 343.4 million in the May 2005 period. ASMs increased from 477.4 million to 1.25 billion and load factor for the month rose 6.2 points to 77.9 percent. Year to date, the carriers flew 4.5 million RPMs versus 1.62 million in the year-ago period. ASMs reached 5.9 billion, compared to 2.2 billion in first five months of 2005. Load factor was up 5.9 points, to 77.7 million.
- ERA Aviation reported it carried 30,328 passengers in May, a drop of 3.48 percent from the year-ago period. RPMs were down 2.39 percent to four million while ASMS rose 4.69 percent to 7.65 million. Load factor dropped 3.86 points to 53.24.
- Express Jet (XJT), flying as Continental Express, reported increased traffic and capacity for May when it flew 910 million RPMs, up 23.1 percent. ASMs increased 11.7 percent to 1.1 billion. Load factor rose 7.5 points to 81.3 percent. Year to date, the airline's RPMs jumped 20.8 percent to nearly 4.1 billion while ASMs increased 12.3 percent to nearly 5.3 billion. Load factor was up 5.5 points to 77.4 percent.
- Horizon Air, a unit of Alaska Air Group (ALK), increased RPMs 10.2 percent to 232.7 million during May, compared to May 2005. ASMs rose 6.1 percent to 308.8 million. It posted a 75.4 percent load factor for the month, up 2.8 points. The carrier, which flies for Alaska and Frontier, flew 585,000 passengers, compared to 555,900 in May 2005. During the five-month period, its RPMs rose 14.6 percent to 1.075 billion while capacity increased 10.4 percent to 1.481 billion ASMs. Its load factor reached 72.6 percent, up 2.6 points from the year-earlier period while it carried 2,732,300 passengers, up from the 2,536,300 carried in the first five months of 2005.
- Mesa (MESA) reported its fleet realignment from US Airways Express to Delta Connection and United Express resulted in ASMs dropping 6.6 percent to 761 million, compared to 815 million in the year-ago period. This should be the last such negative impact, because May 21 marked the end of the fleet realignment as the final five 50-seat RJs left the US Airways fleet, destined for placement into Delta Connection by last week. RPMs increased 6 percent from 571 million in 2005 to 605 million in 2006. Passenger enplanements jumped 6.3 percent to 1,218,499 last month. Year-over-year load factor increased 9.4 points to 79.5 percent. Year to date, RPMs increased 11 percent to 2,783,556, while ASMs increased only 3.9% to 3,685,547. It carried 5,984,213, up 11.9 percent with a load factor that jumped 4.8 points to 75.5 percent.
- Pinnacle (PNCL) passenger enplanements grew 11.9 percent in May compared to the same month a year ago, to 796,844. During the month, Pinnacle flew 460.3 million ASMs, down 8 percent from the year-ago period, largely as a result of its continuing struggles with the bankruptcy of its major partner, Northwest Airlines (NWACQ). Meanwhile RPMs grew 3.8 percent to 376 million. Load factor increased 9.4 points to 81.8 percent. Year to date, the carrier flew 3,561,089 passengers, up 17.5 percent, while ASMs dropped 0.5 percent to 2,254,151. However, RPMs, increased a healthy 12.8 percent to 1,704,401. Load factor was up 8.9 points, to 75.6 percent.
