RAP Loses Funding
In the wake of Mesa’s shutdown of essential air service carrier Air Midwest and subsequent fiscal problems, Regional Aviation Partner lost one of its major funding sources. RAP also cited regulatory issues and an unprecedented rise in jet fuel and other operating costs that plague the entire industry for its drop in funding.
“However, the power behind RAP has always been the needs of the communities who should benefit from the program,” said President and Executive Director Maurice Parker. “RAP has functioned since its inception as a grassroots organization. A grassroots organization is one driven by the collective needs of the constituents in individual communities. The primary source of our strength and activity begins at the local level which, in turn, benefits the entire organization as a whole. The core of RAP remains with the base of local members and supporters in small communities. Whether RAP receives funding from major backers or from voluntary donations from members and supporters, the purpose of RAP is the same as it was when we began on that day back in 2001 – to represent those who have a vested interest in small community air service.”
In the coming weeks it expects to take an objective look at the cause of rising EAS subsidies, the aftermath of soaring fuel prices and DOT’s relative inaction in representing the public interest.
