Quick Takes

Embraer

June 5 marked the first day Embraer's (ERJ) common shares traded on the Novo Mercado segment of the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange BOVESPA, under the ticker symbol EMBR3. Each common share of Old Embraer stock will be exchanged for one common share of Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica S.A., the company that emerged as a result of its restructuring.

Embraer also announced it is transferring work now done at Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. (KHI) and Kawasaki Aeronautica do Brasil LTda (KAB), including the metallic parts from the wings of the Embraer 190 and 195 jets. The move prepares for the ramp up of the production for the two jets. It is part of a Letter of Agreement that calls for the ending of KAB's activities as of July 2006. KHI retains the work packages for the wing control surfaces and the main landing gear doors as well as other work it does for the Embraer 170 and 175 regional jets.

ATR

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) took delivery of its first ATR 42-500 aircraft, the first of seven that are part of a $100 million contract signed last November. The Pakistani flag carrier is scheduled to take delivery of two more aircraft in November and December and four more in May 2007, replacing the carrier's fleet of Fokker F-27s.

Continental

Continental moved its operations at New York's JFK international airport to terminal four June 1, which has consistently ranked at the top of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey's annual customer satisfaction surveys. Continental flights will arrive and depart from Concourse B. The company operates three daily flights from JFK to Houston (IAH) in addition to a Continental Express flight to Cleveland.

Continental Express inaugurated the first nonstop flight between Newark (EWR) and New Brunswick's Greater Moncton International Airport (YQM), expanding Continental's coverage of Canada to a ninth city. The new daily roundtrip is being operated with a 50-seat Embraer ERJ-145. Eighty percent of Moncton's trade is with New England and the northeastern United States.

Bombardier

Bombardier delivered the first of two Q400 high-speed turboprop airlines to Johannesburg-based South African Express Airways, the first such operator on the African continent. The carrier is operating the Q400 in a 74-seat configuration to complement the airline's seven 50-seat Bombardier Dash 8 300 turboprops and six 50-seat CRJ200 regional jets.

BAE Systems

Centavia, a new Serbian operator, leased two BAe 146 aircraft from BAE Systems. Delivery of the first aircraft for the Belgrade-based carrier began in May, with the second aircraft scheduled for July. The 98-seat aircraft will be used on routes to Egypt, Turkey, Greece and Spain. In the fall, they will be switched to regional scheduled services to Basle, Bergamo, Bratislava, Budapest, Cologne and Hamburg. Centavia (Central European Aviation) is headed by Predrag Vujovic, formerly CEO of JAT, Serbia's national carrier. The BAe 146 is also being operated by other Balkan carriers including Albanian Airlines, Hemus Air of Bulgaria and Romavia of Romania.
