Quick Takes

  • After promising a bankruptcy exit plan for well over a year, United Airlines [UALAQ] promised that it will file a plan by Aug. 1. The carrier anticipates leaving Chapter 11 this fall. The nation's second largest carrier has been in bankruptcy proceedings since December 2002. In a separate announcement, Republic Airways said it will place an order for five more Embraer 170s that its Shuttle America unit will fly for United Express. By the end of the year, Shuttle will be flying 28 Embraer 170s for United. At the same time, Republic's Chautauqua unit will fly two fewer ERJ 145s for United.
  • With its first batch of Embraer 190s due to arrive this fall, JetBlue Airways [JBLU] may deploy the new 100-seat planes on routes serving upstate New York. Displaying the new aircraft at Rochester International Airport last month, JetBlue officials said the new plane could fly from Rochester to several cities other than the JetBlue home port at JFK. Rochester officials would like the new plane to fly to Boston as one of its prime business destinations. The carrier is now anticipating making an announcement in August as to which cities will get the new service in November.
  • The Community Air Service Coalition, which was formed to promote and preserve commercial airline service to small communities, now has a Web page to promote its cause. The Web address is: http://www.smallairport.com. The group is also planning a fall meeting for non-hub airports to meet airline officials and discuss air service opportunities.
