Quick Takes – Horizon, Republic/LCC,
Horizon Keeps Travelers Moving During Bad WX
Horizon’s new shuttle service between Seattle and PDX did yeoman work during the chaotic weather in the Pacific Northwest when it not only scheduled larger aircraft but flew at 90 percent load factor. It is expecting similar loads during the rest of the week as the main route – I5 – remains flooded. The treacherous driving conditions and lane closures have driven passengers to the ease of flying above it all with Horizon’s half-hourly service. In addition to upguaging, it cut its lowest unrestricted "walk-up" fare by 40 percent to $99 each way for all seats on the Shuttle.
"When the rains and the flooding hit, many Shuttle flights filled up fast," said Dan Russo, Horizon's director of marketing. "To meet the surge in demand, today we upsized an additional four flights from our 37-seat Q200 turboprops to our 70-seat CRJ-700 jets for four roundtrips on the route. This is making more seats available - and all of them at the new lower price."
Horizon has also introduced Security Express Lines at Portland and Seattle, allowing Shuttle passengers the ability to bypass the long lines at the main screening stations.
Horizon recently launched an offbeat and hilarious advertising campaign, dubbed "The Slog," that has generated buzz through its tongue-in-cheek chronicling of the struggles faced by those choosing to drive between Portland and Seattle. "This flooding has outdone anything we thought up for The Slog," said Russo. Related Story
