NTSB Wants Takeoff Changes

In what observers said may signal a pilot-error decision in the crash of a Comair regional jet last August in Kentucky, the National Transportation Safety Board recommended the FAA require all Part 121 pilots confirm they are on the right runway before takeoff begins. (RAN, September 11, p.1) While it is not a requirement, many airlines already require the cross check of an aircraft's heading before take off. The Board had been focusing on the fact there was only one controller in the tower at the time of the accident, despite federal requirements for two.

With construction on the runways of the Lexington airport, the pilots inadvertently lined up on a taxiway too short for the takeoff run of the Bombardier CRJ. Recently, a general aviation pilot almost repeated the mistake, despite efforts by the airport to make markings clearer. The board also wants all operators to issue guidance on runway lighting requirements for takeoff operations at night. For more information go to http://www.ntsb.gov/recs/letters/2006/a06_83_84.pdf.
