Market Watch – Allegiant, Porter

Porter Putting Fuel Surcharges in Base Fares
Porter Airlines included the cost of fuel in its advertised base fares effective September 19, better reflecting the final cost of a flight for customers.
“We’re pleased to make this change for our passengers since Porter has always favored advertising fares in this way,” said Robert Deluce, president and CEO. “This also enhances Porter’s reputation as a service-oriented airline always looking for ways to improve the passenger experience.”
Previous fuel surcharges ranged from $20 to $40, depending on the destination.

Allegiant Links NY to Disney World
With new service scheduled to be launched November 20, Allegiant will link Elmira in upstate New York to the Orlando-Sanford Airport, some 35 miles from Disney World. Elmira beat out Greater Binghamton which has a shorter runway (7,100 feet) than the 7,600 feet at Elmira which is planning to lengthen its runway to 8,000 feet.
The airline will use MD-80s and 83s for the twice weekly service and hopes to add more frequency and other destinations in the future. Long a backwater on the mainline route map, Elmira is now served with Pinnacle’s Northwest Airlink as well as US Airways Express CRJ 200s.
The airport reported both airline passenger numbers and airport revenue totals for 2007 were up over last year’s figures. The number of passengers flying out of the Elmira Corning Regional Airport in 2007 was 20 percent higher than the number in 2006. Nearly 100,000 (99,422) passengers flew out of the airport in 2007 compared to 83,026 in 2006. Airport revenues totaled $2,233,554 in 2007, representing the highest figure seen at the airport in over 10 years. However, that was before the dramatic capacity cuts imposed by mainline carriers which become effective through this fall.
Greater Binghamton Airport offers 30 daily flights served by US Airways, US Airways Express, Northwest Airlink and United Express to Philadelphia, Detroit and Washington.
Allegiant offers an introductory package that is sure to overcome the inconvenience of flying into Sanford with roundtrip airfare and a three-night hotel stay for $241 and up. Its $89 introductory fare will increase to $109 each way after October 15. Sanford is located midway between Orlando’s attractions and Daytona Beach.
Allegiant is run by former WestAir Prez Maurice Gallaher, who sold his airline to Mesa.
