DOT Debuts New Airfare Index
The U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics last week unveiled an experimental Air Travel Price Index (ATPI). The new index measures airline ticket prices for itineraries beginning in the United States. The third-quarter 2003 index was 2.1 percent higher than the same period the previous year, reaching the highest third-quarter level since 2001. The ATPI uses 1995 as the base year - expressed as 100 points - a quarterly index calculation above 100 represents higher airfares than were paid in 1995.
