Comair, Flight Attendants Resume Talks
Comair and its flight attendants are scheduled to negotiate Wednesday and Thursday, again trying to hammer out a deal that would avoid a strike. Meanwhile, flight attendants, 93 percent of whom voted to authorize job actions, are preparing for them if negotiations fail and Comair imposes demands for concessions. Comair, said the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 513 which represents the flight attendants, is seeking $8.9 million in cuts from the 1,000 flight attendants at the airline. However, Comair said the concessions were valued at $7.9 million.
Earlier this year, Comair was seeking $17.3 million in concessions from its pilot corps and $1 million from its mechanics but pulled back from those targets after an April ruling by the bankruptcy court concerned about the fact that the agreements it forged, and pilots and mechanics ratified, were contingent on an agreement with the flight attendants. The airline decided to reconfigure its restructuring targets to ensure its ability to compete over the long term, according to spokesperson Kate Marx. However, it is trying to get as close as possible to those targets. Pulling back opened it up to more risk and, indeed, the company continues to negotiate with pilots and mechanics, having met recently and currently in process to set dates for future negotiations with those two groups. In the meantime, Marx said that the judge ruled that the proposed concessions it is seeking from flight attendants is fair and equitable for the group.
